Secretary of the Russian Security Council Sergey Shoigu has warned that if Armenia joins the European Union, it will have to take part in anti-Russian sanctions and supply arms to Ukraine.
"Armenia will be forced to join the European Union's sanctions and military-political decisions, including within the framework of such instruments as the Common Security and Defence Policy of the EU, as well as the European Peace Fund. This fund financially supports the armed forces of the Nazi regime in Ukraine.", he told journalists.
According to him, such a scenario would lead Armenia not only into serious economic difficulties, but also force it to impose restrictions on Russia, as Brussels would insist on it.
Shoigu also emphasized that these measures would target not only Russia and Belarus, but also Iran, with whom Armenia’s trade turnover exceeded $737 million in 2024.
