Canada’s Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly, referring to the April 2016 Four-Day War, emphasized that a lasting resolution is only possible through respect for international law. She shared her remarks in a post on X.
“On the anniversary of the April 2016 Four-Day War in Nagorno-Karabakh, we remember those who were lost and reaffirm Canada’s commitment to peace and dialogue. A lasting resolution can only be achieved through diplomacy and respect for international law,” Joly stated.
This marks the ninth anniversary of the Four-Day War, which began overnight on April 2, 2016, when Azerbaijani armed forces launched a large-scale attack against Artsakh. The Azerbaijani army advanced along the entire line of contact. The confrontation, later termed the Four-Day or April War, lasted four days. The fiercest battles occurred on the southern (Hadrut) and northeastern (Martakert) fronts.
According to official data, the Armenian side suffered 110 fatalities and 120 injuries, and lost around 800 hectares of territory. Azerbaijani official sources reported up to 300 casualties, including special forces personnel.
