The Kremlin has reiterated its willingness to support negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Dmitry Peskov, spokesperson for the President of Russia, made the statement.
When asked about recent publications concerning the so-called “Zangezur corridor,” Peskov said that the matter lies solely within the sovereignty of Armenia and Azerbaijan, according to RIA Novosti.
“This is a sovereign matter for Armenia and Azerbaijan. We fully support negotiations between the two countries. And we want both Baku and Yerevan to reach a treaty as soon as possible. At the same time, we remain ready to provide any support necessary during this process,” Peskov stated.
Armenia’s government has denied a report from the Spanish outlet Periodista Digital claiming that Yerevan, Baku, and Washington had agreed on a memorandum of understanding to establish the so-called Zangezur corridor, which the article referred to as “Trump’s Bridge.”
Earlier, U.S. representative Thomas Barrack—former ambassador to Turkey and special envoy on Syria—said the U.S. is ready to lead the Zangezur corridor project near the Iran border to support Baku-Yerevan talks. In response, Armenian Prime Minister’s spokesperson Nazeli Baghdasaryan emphasized that Armenia is not discussing any possibility of transferring control over its territory to third parties, including the area connecting Azerbaijan with its Nakhichevan exclave.
