Senator says Armenia-Azerbaijan peace deal key for U.S. security

U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee member Steve Daines, in an interview with radio station 77 WABC, stated that a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan is of critical importance for U.S. national security.

“This corridor would put the five Central Asian countries on the threshold of moving away from Russian and Chinese influence toward a more European and Western orientation. This is a decisive and important moment,” he said, according to APA.

Recalling his visit to the region in May, Daines said: “I was there in May, met with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, then traveled to Armenia and met with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. They are on the verge of reaching this peace agreement.”

The senator stressed that the process is causing concern in Russia and Iran.

“This is similar to another set of Abraham Accords, which could bring significant dividends not only for the United States but also for the West. Of course, Russia and Iran are not pleased with this situation,” he noted.
