Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, speaking in Washington after a trilateral meeting with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and U.S. President Donald Trump—where a joint declaration was signed—expressed confidence that if Armenia proceeds with constitutional amendments, it will remove what he called territorial claims against Azerbaijan.
“I have no doubt that if Armenia amends its constitution—and it is the Armenian side that is declaring the need for such changes—territorial claims against Azerbaijan will be removed from it. Otherwise, it would primarily be an expression of disrespect toward the United States,” Aliyev told Azerbaijani media in Washington, Minval.az reported.
He added that this position is shared by leading international actors, including the United States.
“Since almost all leading international players, including the U.S., understand our position, when a peace agreement is signed, all issues must be resolved, and any unfounded territorial claims against us must be removed. That is why I have no doubt on this matter,” Aliyev stressed.
Earlier, during the White House trilateral meeting between Pashinyan, Trump, and Aliyev, a joint declaration was signed summarizing the outcomes of the Washington talks. Also in Washington, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, in the presence of the leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the U.S., initialed the “Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan.”
