Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has described the peace agreement signed in Washington between Armenia and Azerbaijan as historic, Orda.kz reports.
According to him, the document puts an end to a decades-long armed conflict and paves the way for establishing diplomatic relations and developing cooperation based on lasting peace.
Tokayev noted that the signing was made possible thanks to the mediation efforts of U.S. President Donald Trump, who managed to convince both countries’ leaders to demonstrate political will and strategic vision.
He added that Kazakhstan also played a role in achieving the agreements, offering Almaty as a platform where the foreign ministers discussed the main provisions of the peace treaty.
On August 8, during a trilateral meeting at the White House between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, a joint declaration was signed summarizing the results of the Washington talks. Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov also initialed the “Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan” in the presence of the leaders.
