Former Turkish parliament member Garo Paylan, of the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party, has called on President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to open the border with Armenia. He made the statement on his X (formerly Twitter) account.
“Azerbaijan and Armenia’s leaders signed a historic agreement in the presence of U.S. President Donald Trump, ending decades of hostility. Our duty is to take immediate steps to make this peace lasting. Mr. Erdoğan, open the Turkey-Armenia border immediately, unite the peoples of Armenia, Turkey, and Azerbaijan. Let’s take this step right now,” his post read.
On August 11, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan spoke by phone with Erdoğan, presenting the results of talks held in Washington with Azerbaijan and the United States. Pashinyan stressed that the current situation is more favorable than ever for implementing the agreements reached in 2022, which concern opening the Armenia-Turkey border for holders of diplomatic passports and citizens of third countries—a plan agreed two years ago but still not enacted.
