Amirbekov: Armenia must take steps before signing deal

Elchin Amirbekov, special representative of the President of Azerbaijan and ambassador, stated that although a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan was preliminarily signed on August 8 in Washington, it has not yet been finalized. He described this development as a significant step toward normalizing bilateral relations. Amirbekov made the remarks during an interview with the French channel I24 News, as reported by Vesti.az .

“For the peace agreement to be signed and implemented, the Armenian side must still take concrete steps,” he said.

In particular, Amirbekov pointed out that Armenia’s current Constitution still contains provisions that he claims reflect "unacceptable territorial claims" and contradict the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.

To ensure lasting peace, Armenia’s Constitution “must be brought in line with the spirit and wording of the already initialed agreement,” he stressed.

Amirbekov added that the very act of initialing the agreement is already a major achievement, resulting from constructive dialogue, political will, and support from various international partners.

“We especially appreciate the personal efforts and contribution of U.S. President Donald Trump. If this process continues with seriousness and determination, it could open a new chapter in the history of the South Caucasus based on cooperation, stability, and shared prosperity,” Amirbekov emphasized.
