German official says Yerevan, Baku ready for complex peace efforts

On September 16, the Armenian Embassy in Germany hosted an official reception at the TUMO Center in Berlin to mark the 34th anniversary of Armenia’s independence.

The event was attended by representatives of the German government, Bundestag members, ambassadors and diplomats accredited in Germany, members of the local administration, and representatives of the Armenian community.

Niklas Wagner, the German Foreign Ministry's Special Representative for Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia, stated during his address: “With the peace agreement initialed on August 8 in Washington, Armenia and Azerbaijan have opened a new chapter in their history. Both countries are ready to address difficult issues through negotiations and are prepared to make tough compromises.”

He added that Germany, along with the U.S. and European partners, has consistently supported the peace process politically, according to the Armenian Embassy in Germany.

Wagner emphasized: “Together with our EU partners, we will continue to offer political and humanitarian support to Armenia in the next steps of normalizing relations with neighboring Azerbaijan. Our own history of reconciliation with neighbors teaches us that lasting peace takes time.”

Armenia’s Ambassador to Germany, Viktor Yengibaryan, said in his speech: “The path to independence was the Armenian people's conscious choice to live freely, independently, and with dignity—values that remain central for our people today. Independent statehood is not only a component of national security but also an expression of sovereignty, democracy, and a culture of peaceful living, a way of life that the Republic of Armenia remains committed to.”

He also referred to the agreements reached in Washington, stating: “From now on, peace, not conflict, will define our region. The agreement on peace and interstate relations opens significant opportunities not only for Armenia, but also for neighboring countries and the European Union.”

The ambassador also praised the strong interstate relations between Armenia and Germany, the ongoing political dialogue at high levels, and the continued bilateral cooperation across various sectors.

On August 8, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev held a trilateral meeting at the White House, resulting in a Joint Declaration summarizing the outcome of the Washington talks.

During the summit, in the presence of the leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the U.S., Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov initialed the “Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan.”
