Zakharova: Russia backs swift Armenia–Turkey reconciliation

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that Russia has consistently supported the prompt reconciliation between Armenia and Turkey, viewing it as an essential prerequisite for peace and sustainable development in the South Caucasus. Sputnik Armenia reported her remarks.

She recalled that the first round of Armenian–Turkish talks took place in January 2022 in Moscow.

“We are ready to continue supporting these efforts, including within the ‘3+3’ format. We expect that when developing agreements between Ankara and Yerevan, existing realities and the interests of the South Caucasus neighbors will be taken into account,” Zakharova said.

According to her, it is crucial to prevent destructive external interference in this complex negotiation process.

The first meeting between Armenia’s special envoy Ruben Rubinyan and Turkey’s special envoy Serdar Kılıç was held on January 14, 2022, in Moscow. On September 13 of this year, Serdar Kılıç visited Armenia as part of the ongoing normalization process.
