Tbilisi upset over exclusion from EU ministerial meeting

The European External Action Service invited the foreign ministers of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan to a ministerial meeting on connectivity in Luxembourg on October 20. Georgia, however, was invited only at ambassadorial level, sparking outrage in Tbilisi, 1tv.ge reported.

The Georgian Foreign Ministry described the decision as a “non-serious approach” and disregard for political and geographic realities. “Given the importance of this topic and Georgia’s role, inviting us at ambassadorial level is unacceptable, and the reasoning behind such a move remains unclear,” the statement said.

It stressed that Georgia’s involvement in EU events is increasingly used as a subject of political speculation. Tbilisi added that Georgia’s participation in such significant discussions should take place at an appropriate level, reflecting its role in regional security and connectivity, and serving the interests of EU member states.

Georgia expressed hope that most EU countries value its role in regional processes, recognize the geopolitical realities, and do not support the approach taken by the EU’s foreign service.
