German ambassador praises peace deal progress

Germany and the European Union have played an active role in the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the past two years, said German Ambassador to Azerbaijan Ralf Horlemann. Speaking at an event marking the Day of German Unity, he reaffirmed Berlin's support for continued dialogue between Baku and Yerevan.

“The EU and Germany have actively contributed to the peaceful resolution process between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the past two years,” Horlemann said, as reported by APA.

He noted that the signing of a peace agreement in August made peace a realistic prospect.

“On this occasion, I would like to congratulate the Azerbaijani government and people for the significant progress made in peace talks with Armenia. The signing of the peace agreement in August finally makes peace within reach. The European Union and Germany have actively participated in this process over the past two years, and we are ready to continue our support in a way that benefits both sides,” he stated during his speech.

Horlemann also touched on Germany-Azerbaijan relations, noting that dialogue and cooperation between the two countries have reached a new level over the past year.

On August 8, a trilateral meeting took place at the White House between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. A joint declaration was signed following the meeting. In Washington, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, in the presence of the three leaders, pre-signed an agreement titled “On the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan.”
