Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has declared that one of the key outcomes of the Washington summit was the “opening of the Zangezur corridor.” He made the remarks in Gabala during a meeting of leaders of the Organization of Turkic States, APA reports.
“The Zangezur corridor is of great importance as a new transport route and as a secondary line within both the Middle Corridor and the North–South Corridor,” Aliyev stated.
His comments followed Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s speech at the United Nations General Assembly, where he said that the term “Zangezur corridor” is perceived as a territorial claim against Armenia.
In his address at the 80th UN General Assembly session, Pashinyan emphasized that although peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan was formalized through the Washington Declaration, serious work remains to be done, and that Aliyev’s rhetoric contradicts the logic of peacebuilding.
Arthur Hovhannisyan, head of Armenia’s ruling Civil Contract parliamentary faction, also urged Azerbaijani officials to ensure that their statements align with the contents of signed agreements.
