Hikmet Hajiyev, assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and head of the Foreign Policy Department, stated that the main goal of the Washington summit was to establish peace, thanking U.S. President Donald Trump and his team for their support.
He noted that Armenia and Azerbaijan are learning to live in peace, a process he described as quite difficult, APA reports.
“At present, Armenia and Azerbaijan are learning to live peacefully because, after gaining independence, neither country knew what peace was. Still, we are in the process of establishing it. Declaring war is incomparably easier. It involves blood, destruction, and all these horrors. But learning to live in peace during this phase is extremely difficult,” Hajiyev stressed.
During the briefing, he emphasized the complexity of the peace process, the importance of ensuring stability in the region, and the need for ongoing cooperation with international partners.
On August 8, a trilateral summit was held at the White House with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. A joint declaration was signed outlining the results of the meeting.
During the summit, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov preliminarily signed a draft agreement “On the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan” in the presence of the three leaders.
