Ankara says “Zangezur Corridor” to reshape regional economy

Özcan Aygün, Deputy Director General for Civil Society Relations at Turkey’s Interior Ministry, has stated that the full implementation of the so-called “Zangezur Corridor” will be a “historic event” that will significantly impact both the regional and global economies.

He made the comments during a discussion titled “Zangezur Corridor: a bridge uniting the Turkic geography,” held as part of the solidarity forum of civil society organizations from member states of the Organization of Turkic States, APA reports.

Aygün said that the opening of the corridor would bring substantial benefits to countries in the region as well as to the global economy.

“If the opening of the Suez Canal brought great advantages to its neighboring countries and the global economy, then the Zangezur Corridor will mark the beginning of major economic transformation in this region,” he said.

In August 2025, the leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the U.S.—Nikol Pashinyan, Ilham Aliyev, and Donald Trump—formally agreed to launch the Trump Route, which includes a land connection from Azerbaijan to Nakhichevan that, according to Trump, “fully respects Armenia’s sovereignty.” Trump said that the U.S. is forming a strategic partnership with Armenia to develop the corridor, which may be extended up to 99 years, with a promise of renewal for another 99 years. Trump said major infrastructure development is expected, with American companies eager to enter the region and invest significantly, benefiting all three countries.

On September 11, Armenian Prime Minister Pashinyan said that Armenia had not leased land to the American side for 99 years but had granted a construction right.
