THE BRITISH EXPERT THINKS AMERICAN AES SILK ROAD POWER COMPANY OUSTS “ITERA” FROM TRANSCAUCASIAN MARKET

17.08.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. Russia, presented by Itera company, and the American AES Silk Road company are struggling for the Transcaucasian power market. AES Silk Road is still holding the first place both in Armenia and Georgia, with such statement spoke Dina Newman, the economical correspondent of BBC.
She noted that despite the fact that the tender for privatization of distributive power networks of Armenia is still in process, the possibility that AES will take the control of the power networks, is great; AES has already succeeded in Georgia.
Azerbaijan, as a country rich in natural resources, occupies a somewhat special position in Transcaucasus, stressed Newman. “The country has internal financial resources, and so there is no need to loan money from international financial institutions and correspondingly there is no need to privatize everything. But neighboring Armenia and Georgia have appeared in a different situation, as IMF and the World Bank demand that all strategic branches be privatized”, noted BBC expert.
In reply to the question whether the Russian power enterprises are being ousted from CIS markets, Newman said: “We may say that this happens in most countries where strategic objects are being privatized. Kazakhstan was an exception this year. Here Itera takes its former position, as Belgian “Tractable” company leaves”. -0-
